Maya began by explaining how her grandmother had raised her and whenever she was getting a little uppity her grandmother would say "Sister, find yourself and sit down". Of course, this profound statement had nothing to do with the physical act of sitting or standing. It was more about finding yourself inside yourself, putting that self in check and acting accordingly.
Instantly I knew this would be a great title for a blog post. I just didn't have a post idea to go along with it, until tonight.
Woe is me. Why can't I ever manage to just get in the bed and drift off to sleep without the added burden of all that's wrong in the world joining me?
My latest mind-boggling discovery pertains to Montana Fishburne, 19 year old daughter of Oscar nominated actor, Laurence Fishburne. It seems that Ms. Fishburne has decided to kickstart her Hollywood career with a sex tape, citing the success of Kim Kardashian and Paris Hilton as proof that her choice is a legitimate means to achieving her goal, Hollywood starlet.
I won't make any assumptions about what her father thinks of all this. Anything from this point on is my own conjecture.
Where did we as a society go wrong? Here's a young woman capable of interacting with all the right people, in all the right circles, with all the clout and influence that's needed in Hollywood to make it big or being privy to those elements certainly increase your chances exponentially - yet she has the illusion that a self promoted sex tape will sky rocket her to stardom.
One portion of the equation she might not have considered is that Kim and Paris both, neither of whom have made it BIG in Hollywood, deny, vehemently, that they had anything to do with the distribution of their tapes. According to both of them, they were just poor helpless damsels caught with their legs up and mouths open which throws yet another kink in her stellar plan. There's a huge difference in having a sex tape and BEING A PORN STAR!
Final point I feel this poor woman - child isn't grasping is she, unlike the others, is a woman of color. Women of color in Hollywood have a hard enough time procuring meaningful roles that aren't the same old tired typecast we've seen over and over again - a subject for another post. The baggage of a sex tape isn't going to make her goal any easier, most likely more difficult.
I had never heard of Montana before tonight. And sadly enough, probably won't be hearing much more about her after tonight. If by chance I did happen to run into her, I wouldn't hesitate in saying "Sister, find yourself and sit down".
