Out with the straightening combs, chemical relaxers and the occasional extensions I accessorized my mane with over the years.
This was my TWA (teeny weeny afro) back in February.
Well three months later here I am!
I've learned so much about my hair...the fact that it's grown this much (which has never happened before) is positive reinforcement that I made the right choice.
My hair is healthier than ever.
There's only one drawback....I'm addicted to trying new things. I've accumulated so many products...I'm sure I could start my own Wal*Mart based solely on hair products.
Without boring you with too many details, here's how I've learned to care for my hair to get the best results
1. Co-Washing atleast 3 times a week. For those of you who haven't heard this term....it's simple....moisturizing conditioners have taken the place of harsh shampoos. I almost passed out when I read that the ingredient that gives shampoo the ability to give you that great lather you love to massage your fingers through....is the same product used to make suds in your dishwater and at your neighborhood carwash!
Washing my hair with warm water then utilizing the moisturizing conditioner leaves it clean, manageable and ....well deep conditioned, of course.
2. I avoid artificial heat as much as possible - very drying
3. Organic Organic Organic - to give my hair the oil and moisture it needs I've enlisted the help of products such as olive oil, avocado oil, coconut oil, shea butter and aloe vera.
4. Favorite Product lines - Fructis (amazing!!), Herbal Essence, ECO, and VO5 conditioners
It's surprising and quite shocking to have people want to touch my hair. It's like it's some sort of anomaly or something. I often hear other natural chicas complain about it ....but it doesn't bother me so much.
My only regret is that I didn't do it years ago.
Years of beauty shop appointments....waiting hours to get your turn, sleeping in an upright position (yes!) to keep your style from messing up before your friends and co-workers could get a chance to see it the next day.....chemical relaxers every 6-8 weeks RAPING my scalp if I accidentally scratched my head before the relaxer was applied.....CAN ANYONE SAY CHEMICAL BURN!!!!
I'm loving it. Hope it's an inspiration for someone online or in RL to jump on the natural bandwagon!!
Until next time...
