Using The 'Write' Tone For Your Blog

Communication - the act of exchanging thoughts and information.

Writing blog posts we all know is a form of communication. As the writer, you're attempting to share your thoughts and provide information to potentially millions of readers.

The disadvantage in written communication as opposed to verbal communication is the limitation you encounter by not having that face to face connection provided when speaking in person.

Your nonverbal cues and verbal tone are left to the imagination of the reader. So making sure you choose the right written tone for your blog is key to capturing the type audience you're looking for.

Just the other night I was texting a friend and became very frustrated with the way the "texting conversation" was going. I couldn't yell at her so I capitalized several words in one of my replies.

Her response was classic. Her reply text was "Don't yell at me!" I thought I was going to roll on the floor laughing (literally). But it made me realize that tone can be conveyed in your writing.

Before you write your first post follow these simple suggestions -

1. Determine who your target audience is going to be
2. Will your posts be geared toward professional information or just fun and entertainment (or both)
3. Identify what your goals are for your blog and your reader's expectations
4. Stick with it - if it's professional - stay on course; if it's a lighter subject matter - stay on course

Just remember that your blog is a reflection of you as a writer. Whatever the subject matter and however you decide to present it is up to you. There are no right ways or wrong ways when you're having fun doing what you love.....just a bit a food for thought every now and then.
