Twitter Etiquette - Or At Least My Version

buzz this

I've been on the Twitter bandwagon since the 140 character phenomenon first took flight. I've watched my following rise and fall like the ever changing ocean tides.

My Twitter updates are random...to say the least. Some days I tweet obsessively and then there are times that I go weeks without a single tweet.

Utilizing Twitter to increase sales, drive traffic to your site and establish other online networking ventures is a great idea. But for me Twitter is more about connecting with people. Discovering just how alike we actually are on this little planet called Earth.

If I had to name one negative about Twitter, it would be the inability to follow more people. I mean true enough...once your following exceeds 2000 you can actually follow as many people as you want. But until you reach that magic number you're only allowed to follow 2000.

I guess it's Twitter's way of preventing excessive spamming...blah blah blah...which brings me to the topic of today's post....And yes, smarty pants....in spite of all this rambling....I do have a topic!
From time to time I do a bit of Twitter housekeeping. I search through my lists of people I'm following and if they're not reciprocating the favor, I stop following them. Childish...maybe. Necessary...absolutely.  I'm almost at my following limit so I'd like to make sure I'm at least following those who've been kind enough for whatever reason to follow me. Don't want to waste my precious tweets on people who aren't interested in them in the first place.

The reason I feel so strongly about following those who follow me - Pure common courtesy. I tend to follow Tweeters that have the same interests as I have. I usually find people I'd like to follow by visiting their blogs or websites. Most Tweeters return the favor. But unfortunately, there are those who don't seem as interested in you as you are in them. And that's fine....simple solutions....STOP FOLLOWING.

If well established and extremely popular and knowledgeable guys like this can return the favor of following, anyone should. In my opinion, it's just the right thing to do.

And sure...we all know what they say about opinions...so share yours - How do you choose who to follow and do you follow people that follow you?

Just curious
