Let me preface this piece by saying "There is absolutely nothing wrong with trying to establish a few revenue streams from your blog". With so many people in the blogosphere claiming they've made tons of money and want to show you how (which they never really do) it's understandable that the masses want to cash in on this blogging gold mine. But at what cost? Some of the practices you may be using to earn a few extra bucks might be sending your readers scampering for the nearest exit.
Widgets, banners, text ads, and affiliate links are great. These are resourceful ways to provide value to your blog. They provide the reader with an opportunity to make purchases or sign up to join programs.
Then there are those advertisements that irk me to no end.
One of the worst advertisement methods I've seen thus far are the ads that interrupt my reading. We've all seen them. Those bothersome ads that hijack the entire page while you're reading. The intrusive interruption only lasts for a few seconds and the minute the SKIP THIS AD button pops up in the upper right corner....I press it immediately.
I don't think I've ever taken the time to even read one of them. To me they're a distraction. I don't want to see a full page ad. I want to read the BLOG.
How do you feel about these intruders? And to those who utilize these type ads - do they generate much revenue?
