What's Up With the Twitter Mafia

Is there anyone out there who doesn't think The Godfather was one of the greatest movies ever? I've been meaning to add The Godfather Trilogy to my home DVD arsenal since forever. I just keep forgetting to pick it up when I'm out shopping for toilet tissue, spaghetti sauce, ziplock bags and air fresheners! However, there's a fine line between enjoying a good gangster movie and being bombarded by irritating tweets asking you to join some mob family.

I always try to respond to my DMs (direct messages) on Twitter. It's just that aspect of my personality strongly influenced by my southern hospitality driven upbringing. So, I click on the link and arrive at this dark and quite sinister looking online game. You select the type "mobster" you want to be and garner points or move up a level based on the different jobs you carry out. Totally boring. However, I'm satisfied because I've done what I set out to do - responded to a tweet sent by a following friend.

It wasn't until last week that I realized once you join your fellow tweeter's mafia family the site starts sending out spam tweets to your followers. Not cool. I received a message from a follower expressing his distaste for spam tweets. I wasn't sure what he was talking about so I took a look at my recent tweets. And low and behold I (someone...thanks spam) had sent a tweet from "me" earlier that day about joining my mafia family.

I headed over to the site and cancelled my membership which will prevent any further annoying tweets. I enjoy Twitter. It's a great way to get acquainted with other people online, share information, grow your website following - it's social media at it's best. What I don't like is the spam or being indirectly associated with sending spam. Have you been hit by the Twitter Mafia yet?
